How to Clean a Museum Display Case?

1. Cleaning Frequency and Schedule

Museum display cabinets are typically cleaned according to a specific frequency and schedule:
Daily Cleaning: The exterior of the display case, especially the glass surface, is cleaned of small stains such as fingerprints and dust from visitors.

Weekly Cleaning: A more comprehensive cleaning and disinfection is performed.

Internal Cleaning: Cleaning the interior of the display case (which must be performed after the artifacts have been safely removed) is less frequent, typically occurring once or twice a year, or in conjunction with special exhibition changes.

2. Cleaning Procedures and Procedures

The cleaning methods and supplies vary depending on the material and location of the display case:
Glass Cleaning:
When cleaning glass, it is recommended to use a dedicated glass cleaner and a soft, lint-free cloth (such as a microfiber cloth).
Avoid using harsh liquids such as soapy water and dishwashing liquid to prevent corrosion of the glass surface.

When wiping, first wipe with a soft cloth sprayed with detergent, then wipe with dry newspaper or a dry cloth to maintain the cleanliness and transparency of the glass. Cleaning Metal Parts:
When cleaning electroplated metal display racks, use a pure cotton white cloth with a dedicated cleaning agent.
For iron display cases, avoid using harsh cloths to avoid scratching the surface. Never use gasoline, as gasoline will react with the paint and cause cracking.
Cleaning Wooden Parts:
Do not use water to clean wooden display cases, as this may cause the wood to become damp and moldy, or affect the internal circuitry.
After turning off the power, use a dedicated cleaning agent and a pure cotton cloth to clean. Denatured alcohol can also be used with a pure cotton cloth.
Cleaning Acrylic:
When cleaning acrylic display cases, never use alcohol or other chemical-based cleaning agents.
Cleaning Lighting Equipment:
Be sure to turn off the power before cleaning lighting equipment. Use a hair dryer on low volume to blow away dust, then wipe with a dry, pure cotton cloth.
Cleaning the Interior:
Cleaning the interior of the display case must be performed after the artifacts have been safely removed. First, use a vacuum cleaner (equipped with a HEPA filter) to remove dust. Then, gently wipe the interior walls and base with a slightly damp, acid-free cloth or a dedicated cleaning tool. Do not use any chemical cleaners to prevent residual harmful fumes from affecting the artifacts.

3. Important Notes

When cleaning museum display cases, pay special attention to the following:
Choose appropriate cleaning tools: When wiping display cases, use dedicated towels or cotton fabrics (such as high-quality soft cotton or finely combed cotton). Avoid using cloths with poor absorbency, coarse fabrics, hard fabrics, lint, or fabrics with hard objects attached, as these can easily scratch the display case surface. Clean the cloth thoroughly after each use (even using an ultrasonic cleaner) to prevent residual particles from scratching the surface during the next wipe.
Avoid using inappropriate cleaning agents: Avoid using harsh or corrosive cleaning products such as soapy water and dishwashing liquid, as these can damage the display case surface and dull the glass. Choose a professional, non-corrosive cleaning agent. Ensure Thorough Drying: After wiping, be sure to air dry the display case to prevent moisture from seeping into the interior and causing rot and mold. Open windows for ventilation or use a dehumidifier to remove any remaining moisture.
Power-Off Operation: When cleaning the display case, always turn off the power (except for some display cases with constant temperature and humidity systems) to prevent short circuits.
Protect the Sealing Strips: The display case's seal is primarily secured by silicone sealing strips. During daily cleaning, special care must be taken to avoid damaging the sealing strips to ensure a suitable and stable environment for the artifacts.
Deal with Stains Promptly: Water stains or other stains on the display case should be cleaned promptly. Do not wait until the stains accumulate, as this will increase the difficulty and hinder maintenance.

4. Post-Cleaning Inspection and Maintenance

After cleaning, there are some follow-up measures:
Check the Sealing: After cleaning, inspect the display case's sealing strips for signs of aging, cracking, or loss of elasticity. This is crucial for maintaining a stable microclimate within the cabinet. Replace any problems immediately. Environmental monitoring: Ensure that temperature and humidity sensors within the display case are functioning properly. Humidity should be maintained between 40% and 60% to prevent rot and mold.
Regular professional maintenance: Complex intelligent systems or specialized components may require maintenance from a professional display case manufacturer or technical service company.
